What is a MOOC?

A MOOC - or Massive Open Online Course - is a free online course open to everyone, regardless of previous experience or qualifications. It is ideal if you want to develop new skills for your professional life or simply explore a new subject area.

MOOCs at Linköping University differ from ordinary single-subject courses in several ways:

  • They are open to everyone, regardless of previous experience. There is no admissions process. Anyone with an email address can join a course. Some courses may, however, recommend prior knowledge or experience within the subject area.
  • They are fully online, with no requirement to attend on campus.Ìý
  • Most courses start continuously and can be completed at your own pace. Some courses may have pre-determined start and stop dates.Ìý
  • MOOCs generally do not award academic credits and cannot be included in a university degree. Course results cannot be transferred to other university studies.

Studying a MOOC requires a high degree of personal responsibility, as learning is largely based on self-study. At the same time, you have considerable freedom to plan your studies according to your own schedule.Ìý
