Biological Sciences explores life in all its forms – from cells and genes to animals, ecosystems, and biodiversity. As a PhD student, you will engage in interdisciplinary research that advances our understanding of biodiversity, evolution, and biological mechanisms, with applications in health, environmental sustainability, and sustainable development.

The PhD programme in Biological Sciences offers a broad and interdisciplinary research education within the life sciences. The subject spans studies of cellular and molecular processes as well as investigations of organisms, populations, and entire ecosystems. Research combines fundamental biological knowledge with applications that address key societal challenges related to the environment, health, sustainable development, and biodiversity.

Within Ecology, research focuses on wetland organisms and ecosystems, ecosystem functioning, conservation biology, and biological environmental monitoring.

Ethology focuses on animal behaviour from evolutionary, genetic, and cognitive perspectives.

Within Genetics, the mechanisms of heredity and genetic variation are studied at levels ranging from molecules to populations.

Evolutionary Biology investigates how species and populations change over time and the processes that drive biodiversity.

Zoology integrates the study of animal physiology, anatomy, and behaviour, as well as interactions between animals, their environment, and other species.

Within Cell Biology, the focus is on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that form the basis of life.

Medical Biotechnology combines biological research with industrial biotechnology to develop new methods and technologies for diagnostics, therapy, and sustainable solutions in medicine and environmental applications.
